Data Center NYC
Architecture without Content

Architecture can be anything. Contemporary arguments on architecture has been about the architecture itself; the definition, boundary, role and the goal. It is no longer about the physical building or construction. It is neither about outside or inside of the building. It is about the idea and concept brought by the architecture.
Architecture has been considered the interpretation of living and physical space. For instance, "A house is a machine for living in" which Le Corbusier mentioned has been one of the most critical interpretation and defined what the modern architecture aims for. Thereafter, contemporariness brought more radical attempt for architecture and beyond.
If the architecture is about the relationship between building, function and users, isolating or eliminating a component will reveal underlying structure and clarify it. Architecture without content, the conceptual approach based on the analysis on newly emerged programs in architecture, will paradoxically highlight the architecture and its content.

Form and Function
Since the end of modernism, the relationship between exterior and interior has been gradually severed. The essence of design was transferred from its integrity to its complexity and contradiction. Once a form followed function, nevertheless, the architecture has bifurcated the envelop and its contents.

Data Center is newly invented program which has no typical typology. Data is intangible extent, however, needs physical space and infrastructure to work. It gives a challenging question, the ‘aesthetics’ for no one but intangible contents.
